My Co-op Story PDF Print E-mail

August 2012
by Alice Charkes

I joined my first co-op right after college in 1984. It was the White River Co-op in Randolph, VT. Then I started a buying club with friends in Sharon VT, then joined the Hanover Food Co-op. I also shopped at the Upper Valley Food Co-op during those years. In 1989 I moved to the Boston area and joined the Arlington Co-op and also shopped at the Harvest Co-op in Cambridge. I then moved to the Brattelboro area and joined the BFC in 1993.

Over the years I've made a point of visiting co-ops while travelling. So I've shopped at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro, NC, the Davis, CA Food Co-op, the Greenstar Co-op in Ithaca, NY, the Lexington Co-op Market in Buffalo, NY, Blue Hill Co-op in ME, the Winona, MN Food Co-op, and one of the many Minneapolis, MN co-ops. Locally I have the occasion to shop at the Putney Co-op, Green Fields Market in Greenfield, MA, City Market in Burlington, VT, Hunger Mountain Co-op in Montpelier, VT, River Valley Market in Northampton, MA, and McCusker's Market in Shelburne, MA.

I love co-ops and always feel at home when I walk into one. I trust the food and I like the people!
