This is a letter that I've been wanting to write for years. My message is short.

To my fellow Co-op members and others who shop at the Co-op: please don't steal from the Co-op. Namely, I am referring to those of you who dip your hands into the bulk bins and munch away. It's not sampling, it's stealing and unsanitary to boot. I've even seen parents encourage their children to "sample." There are plenty of opportunities to sample products at the Co-op and I'm sure if you asked an employee/owner to give you a sample of a bulk item they would gladly accomodate you.

I ask that the Co-op put up signage and challenge you to make the wording strong and direct. In addition, I think it would be helpful if employee/owners call out shoppers who steal in this manner and tell them to stop. I know such an interaction is awkward but unfortunately it needs to be part of the territory.

Thank you,
Susan Odegard
