Bag A Bean For Brattleboro! PDF Print E-mail

BFC Shareholder Carmen Berelson was traveling in California some time ago, and she visited a store that was doing something interesting: for every bag a shopper brought in to save the use of a paper bag at the checkout counter, they received a token that they contributed to a jar assigned to a local non-profit.
She brought the idea back to Alex and others, thinking this would be a great thing for the Brattleboro Co-op to adopt. This idea has indeed been applied in some of our sister cooperatives across the country, and it allows you as an
individual to contribute your nickel to a community organization that needs it. The thing is that your nickel aggregates with all the other shoppers' nickels to make a potentially significant contribution to that non-profit's coffers from our
cooperative.
So, we are hereby adopting this idea. If the five-cent refund is fiscally important to the shopper, they will receive it as they have been for the last few years. If the five-cent refund is not so fiscally important, then the shopper will choose to receive special bean(s) that they will drop into receptacles on the way out of the Co-op for the non-profit of their choice. After a couple of months, we will empty the beans for the bean-counters(!) to tally up, and the Co-op will make a contribution to the non-profit in that amount. Initially, we will cycle through the non-profits that the Co-op has always contributed a year-end amount to that you shareholders have voted on. As time goes on, we will ask you to vote on a new slate of non-profits so that we can broadly contribute to our community.  We will focus largely on non-profits that serve our community in hunger, health, and housing issues.

We will have this system set up by the end of the month: watch for the signs and the receptacles to sprout in the front end.

This is a fun way to cooperate with others to make a larger difference than any of us can make alone. This is yet another positive cooperative difference that we can make in our community. So, if you don't really need that five cents, have some fun and Bag a Bean for Brattleboro!
