June 2015

When the Co-op offered me a job in 1982 it was to be for an eleven-month gig, to stand in for Carl Hirth heading off on a leave of absence. Using the formula
(1 month) = (3 years), the end of the eleven months is finally in sight—I will be stepping down from my position as general manager and off to new adventures as of June 30.

My commitment and endurance at the Co-op was achievable only because of the people whom I have gotten to know along the way, their support sincerely offered and willingly accepted. In a very real sense I matured as a manager along with the Co-op’s progress, my knowledge expanding as the business grew. Recently, while poring through the newsletter archive looking for an ancient article, I was seriously sidetracked from my search, reading what many of us wrote about over the years. It was a conceptual road map of how our organization evolved into what it is today— I could relate to all of it, and it felt real and affirming.
It is time for Brattleboro Food Co-op to benefit from new leadership, and fresh ideas. There is a huge amount of creativity, enthusiasm, and commitment among members and employees, and I believe our board of directors, in choosing Sabine Rhyne as the Co-op’s new general manager, made a great decision. Sabine will take that creativity and enthusiasm to new levels. Her knowledge of food co-ops is profound, her commitment unwavering, and she cares deeply about the enduring success of our Co-op.

I have given the Co-op the best and most productive years of my life. My sincerest thanks to all of you who have in so many ways helped me stay with it. I now look forward to rejoining the BFC’s member-owners as a shopper and supporter. I’ll see you at the Co-op!
